Theory of Spontaneous Generation (1876).  Ernst Haeckel’s theory of spontaneous generation was devised to support Darwin’s theory of evolution.  Haeckel said: “This hypothesis is indispensable for the consistent completion of the non-miraculous history of creation.”  In 1861 (two years after Darwin’s book release) Louis Pasteur dealt a severe blow to the idea of spontaneous generation by proving that microbes, previously believed to have developed spontaneously were in fact airborne bacteria.  This did not stop Haeckel from affirming the defunct theory in his book The History of Creation released in 1876.
